Grumman ’78: What’s all the Fuss about?

Every first friday of every month is the “Grumman premier vendredi du mois”. Basically Grumman ’78 and a couple of other food on wheels gather on the esplanade at the olympic park where people chat, drink and eat. The vibe is pretty cool. So get yourself a beer and wait in the immense line in front of the yellowish Grumman truck. Or actually don’t…

Pork Taco

Pork Taco

After waiting in line for 45 minutes cardboard would have tasted nice. Cardboard is exactly   what these soft shell tacos felt like. Actually they didn’t taste like anything…The pork from the pork taco was dry and even the super hot sauce i added on couldn’t bring it back to life. The sauce was a usual brown bean taco sauce…very usual. At this point Taco Bell would have been exciting. And to make things worse, the taco was smaller then the palm of my hand and was worth a stunning 7$.

Veal Taco

Veal Taco

The veal taco was a bit better. It had some pineapples which gave it a sweet taste, red onions for a crunchy texture and caramelized onions for that smoky oniony taste. The meat was juicy but i couldn’t feel that unique flavor veal usually has, which was a bummer. Again the taco was tiny and cost about 7$…Huge disappointment! Were my expectations too high?…maybe, but those famous Grumman ’78 tacos didn’t have the zing they are known for.

I support food on wheels and street food in Montreal, but the quality should be the same we get in a restaurant. I’m still willing to give this a second try. I think Grumman is acclaimed and popular for a reason. Maybe i got unlucky and encountered a bad taco (lol). But next time i’ll be sure to go to their restaurant on St-Catherine, I hear the tacos are at 4$ and realllllly hope it’s better tasting.
